Here’s a unique way to learn and practice proverbs for a higher level class (and probably high school or univ/adults).
Put a few common proverbs on the board without the ending. You can bring a horse to water but……….
Solicit replies from students to finish them. It can be funny! Then reveal the true ending, if they don’t know.
Next, give out this worksheet. In pairs/groups, students can write up possible endings. Afterward, take up with the real answers and share their own sentences/proverbs. Also look at what the grade 2 students wrote!

Lots of fun. Another activity along this vein – similies. Put up the names of animals on the board. (or maybe watch the Elephant song to get animal names – on Youtube Maybe also use classmates’ names….
Next, is to put on the board…
A / An ………….. is as quick as a ………………….
A / An ………….. is as big as a ………………….
A / An ………….. is as strong as a ………………….
A / An ………….. is as long as a ………………….
A / An ………….. is as kind as a ………………….
A / An ………….. is as stupid as a ………………….
etc…..
Students write sentences using these and then share their answers.
