These series of videos are amazingly effective for classroom instruction. They also give students a view of the world and are a great global issues primer. Matt “danced” his way around the world. Here are several ways to use these videos in the classroom …

Download all the Matt videos or stream in high quality on EFL Classroom in our A/V player. See my best list of videos for use in EFL Classroom’s HERE.

1. All students stand up and dance with Matt! Get the students to shout out either the city name/country or both as they dance… Or one side of the class asks, “where “the hell” is Matt?” and the other answers.

2. Ask students to watch and pause the video. Ask students to guess, “Where the Hell is Matt?”

3. Put a piece of cloth/tape on the screen to hide the place names. Watch the video and ask students to write down as many places that they can guess, Matt visited.

4. Watch the video and pause. Get a student to come to the front of the class and show where Matt actually is, on the map. Make it a challenge for a smart student!

5. Draw a map of the world on the board. Give each student a map of the world. One student maps out Matt’s trip with arrows/lines. Others do the same at their desks, writing in place names.

These are just a few of the ideas I have used. What are your ideas?

Cellphones are the imbilical cord of today’s youth. Instead of fighting against them, let’s use this interest to get them learning English!

Transl8it.com allows the teacher to enter English text and then get the “text message” equivalent. Simply copy this and handout to students. The students look at the text messaging and “decode” this into proper English. After they are done, ask the students to turn to the page in their book that you took the text/script from and check their answers! (or give them a handout of the original to check against / or get a student to put it on the board).

I have made several Transl8it.com games. The most popular being the “Pop Song” version where students decode song lyrics, then check and listen to the songs. Get them HERE on EFL Classroom 2.0.

Use text messaging to help your students with their writing skills.

If you want to be a really effective teacher, get a laser pointer! They cause only a dollar or two at most and really help a teacher effectively modify curriculum.

With a laser pointer, you can be helping a student and very quickly point to what you are talking about: spelling, a picture, a thing and facilitate student understanding. Like other forms of modification – using pictures, underlining key vocabulary, dictionaries, highlighters, a laser pointer effectively helps students understand and learn.

If you really want to get spiffy, get a pointer that also works with power point. Then you can move around the classroom while controlling the presentation. Students at the back of the class will love you!

Jeopardy is a great way to review your student learning and to motivate your students. Also a good game for a camp or a class that likes competition.

If you have a computer, use many of the games/templates on EFL Classroom 2.0. (Also go to the bottom of the Games page for flash jeopardy games). Just change the slides for questions specific to your students.

If you don’t have a computer, use THIS brainstorming worksheet. Students create the questions for Jeopardy based on the categorizes and brainstorming in the mind map.

Go around the classroom, each group taking turns to ask their questions. I have students reply by knocking lightly. This way, it is easier for the teacher to tell who was first. Make sure to have a prize handy for the winning team (or just let them leave class first!)

Here too are some great trivia questions, 1,000s of them!

1. Choose an object and students ask questions about it. Give them question prompts to help, written on the board. For example;

Is it ….. heavy/light/big/small/young/old/(color)/hard/soft/

Can you ……… with it?

Can it ……..it?

Does it have ….? Does it ……?

Students guess and have 20 questions to figure it out.

Another version is to give students a handout with many pictures. They ask questions and try to guess which picture it is (under 10 questions).

If you have a computer, try 20 Questions online. Click Classic 20Q . I recommend starting with thinking about a “chopstick” and see if the computer will guess it! It will! Make sure to have a student as the MC, asking questions for the computer…
