This is a fun way to teach negative commands, wake up the class or simply make them laugh.

Write on the board “DON’T TOUCH ME”.

Have the class say the phrase with you one or two times to get used to it. Some may already know it.

Poke a student GENTLY on the shoulder or on top of the head. The student may need to be prompted to say “Don’t touch me.” Alert students will yell it before you can get anywhere close, which tends to be funny.

When the student says “don’t touch me” say “ok” and move on to another student.

Wander through the class attempting to poke students and make them use the target language.

After an adequate length of time, play this video:

Maybe even play it twice.

This is a fun way to not only to incorporate singing into the lesson, but get the class moving.

Find a section of an unfamiliar song that the students have probably never heard.

Teach lyrics to the class using a powerpoint or handouts. Either way, lead the class through the song line by line and make sure they understand it.

Divide class into teams and tell them they have 10 minutes to make a song and dance using these lyrics. Tell the class they will have a blind vote at the end to see whose song and dnace were the best.

Have the blind vote at the end.

As a bonus, you can show a youtube video of the song to see what the “real” version is like.

Keep the lyrics short and simple if you’re trying this on the class for the first time. If it goes well, you can always give them more.

Pass the Paper (Snowball).

Students in groups pass around a piece of paper while music plays. When it stops, whoever has the paper must answer the question or do a specific task. In this game - finish the Christmas Carol.

Pass the paper is an excellent interactive way to review the lesson / curriculum.

These series of videos are amazingly effective for classroom instruction. They also give students a view of the world and are a great global issues primer. Matt “danced” his way around the world. Here are several ways to use these videos in the classroom …

Download all the Matt videos or stream in high quality on EFL Classroom in our A/V player. See my best list of videos for use in EFL Classroom’s HERE.

1. All students stand up and dance with Matt! Get the students to shout out either the city name/country or both as they dance… Or one side of the class asks, “where “the hell” is Matt?” and the other answers.

2. Ask students to watch and pause the video. Ask students to guess, “Where the Hell is Matt?”

3. Put a piece of cloth/tape on the screen to hide the place names. Watch the video and ask students to write down as many places that they can guess, Matt visited.

4. Watch the video and pause. Get a student to come to the front of the class and show where Matt actually is, on the map. Make it a challenge for a smart student!

5. Draw a map of the world on the board. Give each student a map of the world. One student maps out Matt’s trip with arrows/lines. Others do the same at their desks, writing in place names.

These are just a few of the ideas I have used. What are your ideas?

Singing is a great way to teach English and students will enjoy it very much. One great way is to take a song which repeats a lot and give groups of students a part. One song I like to use is ABC by Michael Jackson. Give each group a task / lyric to sing… for example.

Group 1 – ABC

Group 2 - 1,2,3

Group 3 - Do Re Mi

Group 4 - Baby you and me girl….

The teacher or a student can sing the other lyrics. Lots of fun and it makes songs come alive…. Another great song is “That’s the way Uh huh Uh huh , I like it. Get this and the karaoke player with hundreds of songs on EFL Classroom 2.0’s Karaoke page! It’s easy to even make your own karaoke song to play, watch the screen cast there…

Then, ask them to choose and write in large letters, one of those words/phrases.

Divide the students into groups. The students stand up showing everyone their word and holding it high.

Play the song and students must sit down when they hear their word. Stand up again when they hear it again. Last one standing wins and the group with the most standing wins too!

Lots of variations, students can decide to begin sitting or standing and that gives an element of chance.
