Hi, there!,
Last year, I asked my students to do the following project: CREATE YOUR ENGLISH GAME! It was a hard task, but so REWARDING!!!!!!! Because of that, I’ve just decided to share this interesting useful IDEA with other students and teachers. Let me tell you what you need …
1. Students have to make up everything: the rules of the game, the title, the instructions, the small cards, token, dices, and so on.
2. The teacher can ask them to write questions, short English tests on every card, challenges, bets, etc. These cards will make them review all the grammar constructions, vocabulary seen in every unit, etc.
3. The most important thing is they are going to learn and have fun!!! So, I encourage all of you to carry out this project with your students, they’ll never forget this enriching motivating task.
I hope you’ll enjoy it!
PLEASE, IF YOU MAKE THIS PLAN WITH YOUR STUDENTS, CAN YOU TELL ME SO AND SHOW ME THEIR GAMES?
I’D LIKE TO SEE THAT THIS IDEA IS WORTHWHILE AND HELPS OTHERS IMPROVE ENGLISH. THANK U!

This sort of project sounds amazing! I’ve heard of other (better!) teachers than me who’ve managed to do this sort of project successfully. But, I’m a little spooked by how exactly to run this project, from the ground up.
What materials should I get in advance? How do I get the kids started? Once they have an idea and are happily working away, I’d imagine that it’ll be great and smooth. But getting them on the right track sounds like the tricky part…
I remember growing up that I made my own board games with my friends a few times! That was fun. How could I get my students working on something like that…?

Daniel, you can do it! If you can play a board game, you can make one. Here’s one way. First, teach board game language–lose a turn, go again, advance one space, etc. –and have them play board games. Next, design a short game together. Pick a theme, like “going shopping.” Brainstorm some shopping words. Make up a few rules. Then play. You can always use a coin with “heads” for one space and “tails” for moving 2 spaces. Or, “rock, paper, scissors” with “rock” being 1, “paper” being 2, and “scissors” being 3. They can just draw the spaces on a big piece of paper. For shopping, maybe the winner must buy a certain number of items and write them down. Or complete a seasonal outfit–say, what you would wear in winter. Then have the students make and decorate their shopping game. After that, they will get really creative about their own themes, etc. They can work as teams. Then have a class period or two where they switch and play each others games. If you use standard size copier paper, then you can copy the games and let the students take them home to keep, if they want them.
I’m sure there are many other ways to teach it, but this is one way.

Hi, Daniel and Donna,
Thank you fOR commenting my teaching recipe, I’m pleased! I encourage you, Daniel to carry out this project, Donna is certain! You have to plan it in advance and that’s all! How old are your students? You must think about how many lessons you are going to spend with this, if they are going to do this in class, or at home; materials: easy! just cardboards, paintings, crayons, etc.(take a look my students’ games), and as a dice, they can use their imagination! It’s not difficult at all.
Then, you have make them clear your goals, how you are going to evaluate and punctuate every section, such as board game, clear instructions, theme of the game, grammar-vocab-role play questions, or if they were pirates who were looking for treasures…
THERE ARE AS MANY POSSIBILITIES AS YOU WISH, THAT’S THE BEST THING, THEY ARE GOING TO PLAY, LEARN AND USE ENGLISH!!!
GOOD LUCK!!!
